Who can sponsor their family to live in the UAE
If you are an expatriate with a valid residency permit, you can sponsor your family to live in Dubai. However, the expatriate is required to earn a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 with accommodation to sponsor their spouse and children. Earlier, only those expatriates working in listed professions were able to sponsor their family. In March 2019, the UAE government amended its previous provision which enables any foreign worker to sponsor family members irrespective of profession.
When to Start the Process?
Normally, an expatriate resident who wishes to sponsor his spouse and children brings them to Dubai on a visit visa or tourist visa. This means when the family lands in Dubai they will be provided with an entry permit by the immigration. The expatriate resident has to change the visa status of the family to a valid resident visa holder. The expatriate has 60 days to apply for their dependents’ residence visa after they enter the UAE. PRO companies in Dubai can undertake the process of status change on behalf of the expatriate resident.
Requirements for Sponsoring Wife
An expatriate resident will be able to sponsor his wife only when he submits an authenticated marriage certificate to prove the marital relationship. The marriage certificate should be in Arabic or duly translated into Arabic by a certified translator. The residents can get the help of PRO firms in Dubai in case of translation requirements. In some cases, a Muslim resident is allowed to sponsor his two wives subject to General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) approval.
Sponsoring Sons & Daughters
An expatriate resident is allowed to sponsor his daughters only if they are unmarried. Expatriate residents are allowed to sponsor the visa of their son or sons up to the age of 18. If the son is studying in the UAE or abroad, a resident can sponsor his sons to the age of 21 after providing proof of his education.
An expatriate resident can also sponsor his stepchildren. However, this is subject to GDRFA’s conditions such as a deposit for each child and a written no-objection certificate from the biological parent. Their residence visas are valid for one year and can be renewed annually. PRO firms in Dubai can make the process of sponsoring children a hassle-free process.
Medical fitness requirement
The process of granting a new resident visa or renewing an existing one involves mandatory medical fitness. Men and women who have completed the age of 18 are required to undergo a medical fitness test at government-approved health centres in the UAE. The applicants seeking a first-time visa or renewal will be tested for two communicable diseases which are HIV and pulmonary tuberculosis.
HIV and pulmonary tuberculosis are examined by testing their blood and taking an x-ray of their chest respectively. If an applicant is found to be HIV positive or having tuberculosis, they will be deemed medically unfit and therefore will not be granted a residence visa. They will be deported immediately by the UAE’s authorities.
However, applicants with dormant or inactive pulmonary tuberculosis will be considered medically fit. The government will grant them a one-year ‘Health Fitness Certificate for Residence’ subject to treatment and follow-up by the Department of Preventive Medicine or an equivalent government health authority. It is recommended to test for these diseases in the country of origin to avoid last-minute rejection.
